About the shop

Bay Custom Auto works on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News, handling both ends of the trade: the maintenance and repair that keeps a vehicle running, and the custom work that makes it yours. Those are different disciplines and not every shop does both well.

The custom side rewards patience and measurement — a modification that fits badly is worse than no modification at all. The repair side rewards honesty, because a customer who is told the truth about a failing component comes back for the next ten years. The Peninsula has enough shops doing neither particularly well that doing both properly is a position worth holding.

What we do

General repair
Brakes, suspension, cooling, electrical and the diagnostics that come before all of them.
Custom work
Modifications specified and fitted properly, with an honest conversation first about how a change affects reliability, insurance and inspection.
Wheels and suspension
Fitment done with measurements rather than hope. Ride height, clearance and geometry all change together.
Performance work
Sensible upgrades that suit how the vehicle is actually driven, and straight talk about the ones that are not worth the money.
Diagnostics
Check-engine faults and intermittent electrical problems traced rather than guessed at — particularly important on a vehicle that has been modified.
Maintenance
Routine servicing on daily drivers and on project vehicles that still have to get to work on Monday.

How it works

  1. Talk it through

What the vehicle is, what you want from it, and what your budget actually is. Custom work goes wrong when that conversation is skipped.

  2. Specify and measure

Parts chosen to fit the vehicle you have. Measurements taken before anything is ordered, because returns cost time nobody has.

  3. Build or repair, then test

The work gets done and the vehicle gets driven before it is handed back.

Questions people ask

Do you only do custom work?

No. A lot of the work here is ordinary repair and maintenance on daily drivers.

Will a modification affect my inspection?

Some will. Ask before the work is done rather than after — it is a conversation worth having at the quoting stage.

Can you source parts?

Call with what you have in mind. Part of the job is knowing which parts are worth fitting and which ones will disappoint you.

How long does custom work take?

Longer than repair work, and largely determined by parts. You will be given a realistic timeframe rather than an optimistic one.

Do you work on older vehicles?

Call and describe the vehicle. Age matters less than parts availability.
