About the shop

Billy Lewis Cooling and Heating works out of MacDonald Road in Chesapeake, handling residential heating and air conditioning across South Hampton Roads. It is the kind of shop where the person who picks up the phone is the person who will be standing in your crawlspace, and where a repair gets explained in plain language before anyone touches a wrench.

Coastal Virginia is hard on HVAC equipment. Salt air corrodes condenser coils, summer humidity runs systems at full tilt for months, and a house that felt fine in April can be unlivable by the first week of July. Most of the work here is the unglamorous kind that keeps that from happening: diagnosing a system properly, fixing what is actually broken, and being straight about when a unit is worth repairing and when it is not.

What we do

Emergency repair
No heat in a cold snap, no cooling in a heat wave. Diagnosis first, so you know what failed and why, before any parts get quoted.
System replacement and sizing
A unit that is too large short-cycles and never pulls the humidity out of the air; too small and it runs constantly without ever catching up. Replacements get sized to the house, not guessed from the old nameplate.
Seasonal maintenance
Coil cleaning, refrigerant check, drain line clearing and electrical inspection. The cheapest hour anyone spends on an HVAC system, and the one most often skipped.
Ductwork and airflow
One room that never gets cold is usually a duct problem, not an equipment problem. Leaking, crushed or badly balanced runs get found and corrected.
Heat pumps
The system most Hampton Roads homes run on, and the one most often misdiagnosed. Defrost boards, reversing valves and auxiliary heat that will not stop running.
Thermostats and controls
Replacement, wiring corrections, and setting up a programmable or smart thermostat so it actually saves money instead of fighting the system.

How it works

  1. You call, someone picks up

You describe what the system is doing. You get an honest read on whether this is an emergency, something that can wait a day, or something you can check yourself in two minutes.

  2. Diagnosis before pricing

The system gets tested, not eyeballed. You are told what failed and what it will take to fix it, with the option to repair or replace laid out plainly.

  3. The work, then the explanation

The repair gets made and you are shown what was wrong. If something else on the system is heading for failure, you hear about it now rather than on the next service call.

Questions people ask

How fast can someone get out here?

Call and ask — it depends on the day and how bad the failure is. No heat in freezing weather and no cooling in a heat wave get treated as emergencies.

My system is old. Repair it or replace it?

It depends on the failure, the age, and the refrigerant it runs. A cheap repair on a fifteen-year-old unit sometimes buys another five years, and sometimes it is money thrown at a system that will fail again in August. You will get a straight answer, not a sales pitch.

Why is one room always hotter than the rest?

Usually ductwork rather than the unit — a leaking run, a crushed flex duct in the attic, or a system that was never balanced. It is diagnosable and usually fixable without replacing equipment.

How often should the system be serviced?

Twice a year is the standard for a heat pump, once before cooling season and once before heating season. In this climate the cooling-season check matters most.

Do you work on units you did not install?

Yes. Most calls are for equipment installed by someone else, sometimes years ago.
