About the shop

Dodd Marine works on boats in Yorktown, on the York River side of the Peninsula. Boat repair is a seasonal trade with an unforgiving calendar: nothing needs doing all winter, and then everyone needs the same thing in the same three weeks of spring.

Salt water is relentless. It corrodes electrical connections, seizes hardware, eats through anodes and finds every gap in a seal. A boat that ran perfectly in October will frequently refuse to start in April, and most of that is preventable with work done at the right end of the season rather than the panicked end.

What we do

Engine service and repair
Inboard and outboard. Diagnosis, tune-ups, impellers, fuel systems and the starting problems that appear on the first warm Saturday.
Repowers
New power matched to the hull and to how the boat is actually used, with honest advice on when a repower makes sense against a repair.
Winterisation and spring commissioning
The work that decides whether next season starts smoothly. Fuel stabilised, water out of everything that freezes, and a proper recommissioning in spring.
Electrical
Corroded connections, charging problems, electronics and the intermittent faults that salt air specialises in creating.
Hull and bottom work
Bottom paint, anodes and the below-waterline maintenance that gets ignored until it becomes expensive.
Steering and controls
Hydraulic and cable steering, throttle and shift linkages, and the stiffness that has been getting slowly worse for two seasons.

How it works

  1. Describe the boat and the problem

Make, engine, and what it is doing or failing to do. Marine diagnosis starts with knowing what you are working on.

  2. Get in the queue honestly

In spring everyone wants their boat now. You will be told a realistic date rather than one designed to keep you from calling someone else.

  3. Fix it and prevent the next one

The repair gets made, and you are told what maintenance would stop it happening again — which in a salt-water environment is most of the value.

Questions people ask

My boat will not start after the winter. Is that serious?

Usually not. Fuel that has sat, a dead battery, or a corroded connection accounts for most spring no-starts. Call and describe what it does when you turn the key.

How far ahead should I book spring work?

Earlier than you think. Everyone on this coast wants their boat ready for the same fortnight, and the queue is real.

Is winterisation actually necessary here?

Yes. Hampton Roads gets cold enough for freeze damage, and the fuel and corrosion problems happen regardless of temperature.

Repower or rebuild?

It depends on the hull, the hours and what you use the boat for. You will get a straight assessment rather than a quote for the biggest job available.

Do you work on the make I have?

Call with the boat and engine details and you will get a direct answer.
