About the shop

Grow Depot is on Virginia Beach Boulevard, supplying plants, soil and growing gear to gardeners across the Beach. Growing here is not the same as growing anywhere else in Virginia. The coastal plain gives you sandy soil that drains too fast, summer humidity that breeds fungus, salt carried on the wind, and a growing season long enough to be genuinely productive if you work with it.

That is what a local garden shop is for. Not the plant that looks best on a shelf in April, but the one that will still be alive in August, in your soil, in your light. The advice is worth more than the stock, and it is free with either.

What we do

Plants and starts
Varieties chosen for this climate and this soil rather than for a national catalogue.
Soil and amendments
Sandy coastal soil needs organic matter more than it needs fertiliser. Compost, amendments and mixes that actually hold water here.
Growing equipment
Lighting, containers, hydroponic and indoor growing supplies for the season when it is too hot outside to do anything.
Nutrients and feeding
Feeding programmes that suit what you are growing, rather than one bag for everything.
Pest and disease control
Humidity here brings fungal problems that gardeners from drier states have never had to think about. Identification first, then treatment.
Advice
Bring a photograph of the problem or a leaf in a bag. Diagnosis at the counter beats guessing from a search result.

How it works

  1. Say what you are growing and where

Full sun, part shade, container, raised bed or in the ground. The answer changes completely between them.

  2. Get set up properly

The right plant, the right soil to put it in, and honest advice about what it will need through July and August.

  3. Come back when something goes wrong

    It will. Bring the leaf.

Questions people ask

What grows well here?

More than most people expect, but the choices matter. Come in and say what you are trying to grow and where, and you will get a straight answer about what will thrive and what will struggle.

My soil is pure sand. What do I do?

Add organic matter, then add more. Sandy coastal soil drains too fast to hold nutrients, and building it up is a season-by-season job rather than a one-bag fix.

Something is eating my plants. Can you help?

Bring a photograph or a sample in a sealed bag. Identifying the pest or disease first saves you spraying the wrong thing.

Do you carry indoor growing equipment?

Yes — lighting, containers and supplies. Call to check stock on anything specific.

When should I plant?

It depends on the crop and the year. The last frost here is earlier than most of Virginia, which buys you time at the front of the season — ask before you commit a whole bed.
